Spring Break in Halifax!

Posted in March Break

If you haven't gone away for the break, fear not!, there is plenty going on in the city! These are just some of the events, check our event calendar for the full list! 1. Kids 8+ can check out "The Stars Have No Break" Planetarium Show! Some of the brightest stars visible are 'up' in the constellations of a clear Winter-Spring nightsky: This year, Jupiter and brilliant Venus accompany them. Come and learn where to find these objects and why they shine. A quick tour of other planets is included. 2. The Maritime Museum’s Pirate Adventures features drop in activities each day throughout the break and is open to children of all ages and their families. They encourage children to come dressed as pirates to start their journey to exotic destinations and discover sea-faring traditions while having boat loads of fun to try various activities and crafts. 3. Alderney Landing presents The Lonely Leprechaun by the Maritime Marionettes. A great family show about global warming. 4. Musician Jamie Junger and his daughter Sadie have created Fishin’ for Pickles , a whimsical children’s album available on iTunes & CD Baby. The songs are fun, danceable and educational. He is performing several times over the break at various libraries across the city, check the event calendar for specific dates & times. 5. Who makes the best pizza in Bedford — Tareks, On the Wedge, Pizza Girls, Martha’s or Papa Mario’s? Sample their pies and vote for your favourite at the Bedford Public Library! 6. Little Ray's Reptiles is at the Museum of Natural History every day over the break! 7. Have a budding artist on your hands? You can drop-in and sketch in the AGNS with drawing tips from a well-qualified artist. Drawing boards, pencils and paper will be supplied. No experience is required. Or, you can head to the Spring Garden Road Library on Friday to join artist and illustrator Sydney Smith as he demonstrates different art techniques in this hands-on workshop. Sydney has illustrated a number of children’s books including Mabel Murple by Sheree Fitch and The Dread Crew by Kate Inglis. 8. Been grossed out by Grossology yet? Head on down to the Discovery Centre and prepare to learn more about snot, vomit and farts than you ever wanted to!

Holiday Time: The Master Packing List

Posted in TravelMarch BreakHolidays

Many families in HRM are taking this March Break as an opportunity for a family adventure, and family adventures require packing. Gone are the days of cramming a bunch of outfits and toiletries in a bag and skipping off to the airport. Because once you have kids, you realize how much more STUFF you need when you travel. And not just STUFF, but vital stuff, like sunscreen and diapers and nightlights. Now you need to be organized, and thorough.

We've put together this Master Packing List (with capitals!) that we hope contains most things that you might need on your trip; be it to a theme park in Florida, a snowy ski hill in Maine or a grandparents spare room in Winnipeg. Print it out and use it as a guide when you pack to make sure that you haven't missed anything. Or highlight all the things that you will need on your type of trip and then go back through and pack them.

However you use it, we hope that it makes heading off on your Spring Break Adventure feel more like an adventure, and not like a game of "What Did We Forget This Time?!?".

Get Active: March Break

Posted in March BreakGuest bloggersGet Active

March Break: two words that have kids leaping with joy as vacation begins but all too often have parents' hearts sinking like a stone at the same time. After the initial euphoria of being out of school wears off, kids all too often end up whining "I'm bored. There's nothing to do," before the week is even half over.

Whatever your plans, there are fun ways to get physical activity into the March Break mix.  It just takes a bit of imagination to keep the little darlings happy and to stop them -- and you -- from climbing the walls.

Active vacations
Are you one of the lucky ones who get to escape the sleet and slush of our Maritime winter in exchange for sunnier skies (and temperatures most likely)? Just because you're on vacation doesn't mean you and your family have a free pass to be lazy. You don't need to truck the kids to the hotel gym to get some exercise in though - family holidays offer lots of great opportunities to expose your kids to sport and physical activity (and best of all, they will just think they're having fun on vacation). Take them to the hotel pool, go beachcombing, explore local parks or hiking trails or spend the day exploring theme parks on foot.

Involve your children in the planning
Spending March Break at home? No problem! Kids are more likely to actively engage in the activity if they have had some say in it. Have everyone write down their interests and then pull together a list of activities to do based around those interests. Ask everyone to suggest a few indoor activities, a few outdoor activities and a few ‘field trip' activities but make sure everyone makes at least one ‘active' activity suggestion for each category- that will help to ensure your activity list doesn't end up filled with sedentary activities like movie and/or video game marathons.

Put together an activity jar
Now, take that list of activities you and your family just made and go one step further: put each suggestion on its own slip of paper and put them in a jar. Then have everyone pick an activity or two out of the jar each day. It doesn't really matter if they are activities you might have planned on doing anyway -- it's fun to pick out of the jar and be surprised!

Check out what's available in your community for day camps
Working parents often scramble to find childcare arrangements over March Break. Local businesses, community centres, art galleries, museums, etc will often put together special March Break programs.

Fitness and recreation centres like Dalplex have March Break day camps in place to keep your kids active all week. Your kids can tune up their bodies and social skills by spending their days playing,  cooperating with others, following directions, trying new activities and making new friends along the way.

You can also check out the list of local March Break camps that HRM Parent has been compiling.

And finally:

Divide and conquer
Divvy the week up between other parents who are in the same boat. Whether it's a trip to the Emera Oval, a morning of building snowmen, an afternoon at the playground, or an evening at the movies, joining forces with other parents can make the daunting task of planning a whole week's more manageable for all involved, not to mention that kids get a change of scenery by going to play somewhere else with their friends.

Dalplex, Dalhousie University's main fitness and recreation facility, has been proudly serving the community for over 30 years, offering a wide variety of fitness, wellness and recreation programs and classes for adults, children, youth and seniors.  Visit their website or follow them on facebook.

Get Active: 123 Ski

Posted in Winter funOutdoor funMarch BreakGet ActiveDay trips

This has been the most enjoyable winter I can remember since my son was born.

We fully embraced winter sports this year, he both learned to skate on the oval and learned to ski on our NS hills. I've always been a fan of skiing and think that it's a great winter family sport. Many a spring break in my family was spent on a mountain or hill and I learned first-hand this winter that the more activities you can do out in the snow the more you don't want it to ever go away! I also learned that a child that skis all day sleeps like a log all night.

I had no idea how my son would like skiing and I didn't want to push the envelope if he wasn't interested. So we headed out to Martock one weekend to try it out. They have a great package for little beginners, $75.00 gets you a lift ticket for the day, a one-hour private lesson and full rental (helmet included). I highly recommend Jimmy as an instructor, he was phenomenal. The patience of a saint, great with kids, and he intuitively knew when to plop down in the snow for a bit of a break. After a one-hour lesson O was sold and we haven't looked back.

We've done a few more private lessons, the rest of the time we just wing it on our own. We've tried both Martock and Wentworth and I can honestly say that we are very lucky in HRM to have pretty easy access (by car) to both.

Martock is a good place to start, simply because it's the closest at about 50-60 minutes from downtown. There's a nice bunny hill with a rope tow, it's strong so beginners definitely need help with it. There are lots of great runs on the rest of the hill but the easiest skiing is from half way down the hill so you need to get off the t-bar half way up. The chairlift will only take you to the top where your only choices are intermediate runs.

Wentworth is a great place, a much bigger hill overall with a vertical of 815! They have a brand new magic carpet on the bunny hill which is really easy for a 4-year-old to get on and off on their own. But it is a longer drive, about 1.5 hours from downtown. Their beginner package is $47.00 for a full lift ticket and rental (helmets also included here) and a one-hour private lesson is $55.00. If you choose to teach your children yourself it's just $15.00 each for a magic carpet pass for the day (same price for both adult & kids). One of the best things about Wentworth is that there are really easy runs right from the top of the chairlift. Chickadee is a gentle, fun ride for a new skier and will take you about a half hour to get down. And a word to the wise, once they try the chairlift they ALWAYS want to take the chairlift. Anyone at Wentworth hearing cries of "Wooowee look out below" from a small child on the chairlift, ummm, that wasn't us!

If skiing is something your family has been thinking of trying, this might be a good time to do so! The weather is warmer and there's still lots of snow on the hills. So head out and carve it up!
