How to make appropriate media choices for your child

Posted by CharmaineD in Books and media

I was listening to CBC Mainstreet last week and they were discussing the inadequacy of the rating system on movies. It's true that a simple General or PG rating can't really tell you if a movie is appropriate for your child. What one child finds scary and distressing another child may not, and what is considered acceptable to one parent may not be acceptable to another. This makes it difficult to get a good feel for a movie without viewing it first (which is always a good option).

When I'm trying to decide if a movie is appropriate for my son Alex, I ask other parents for their reviews, but also check the movie on Common Sense Media and Kids-in-Mind. Common Sense Media includes reviews on movies, games, music and television programs. Along with a review, they attach an age rating to each and include a summary section called 'What parents need to know', which I find particularly useful. There are also reviews from other parents and kids. Kids-in-Mind reviews movies in great detail, mentioning each scene that could fall under the categories 'Sex/nudity', 'Violence/gore', and 'Profainity', and attaching a rating to each category. Kids-in-Mind satisfies my need-to-control-and-know-everything compulsion, but as my husband points out, since even the smallest 'offense' gets mentioned I always find something to object to with every movie!

Do you know of any other sites that are useful for screening movies, TV shows, etc? How do you decide what is OK for your kids to watch?

Yeah, we took Alex to see Madagascar 2 as his first movie in a cinema and I wasn't too pleased with some of it!

I do wish we had held off with movies until he was older. He watched a few just before he turned four when we were visiting grandparents and he liked them so we brought them home with us. But I find he really doesn't understand a lot of it and that actually just makes him want to watch it more, because he's obsessed with trying to figure it out! He understands Kids CBC shows a lot more. Anyhow, I kind of wish we had left movies to be a special event at a cinema. Though family movie nights are nice too! smilies/smiley.gif

We have only just begun letting our 4 year old watch movies - and what a challenge it has become! Needless to say, Madagascar 2 will be put away for a few more years. There are a number of words used (ie. stupid - which makes me crazy) that I don't want to hear my 4 year old mutter. On the upside, Winnie the Pooh's Heffalump was a success (though my son did note that "Lumpy" left the forest even though he didn't ask his mommy first)! Most of Disney's movies have too many scary characters and there is too much emphasis on looks - the mean characters are always portrayed as being ugly. I look forward to trying the sites you mentioned in your posting.
