Ends Of The Earth: From Polar Bears To Penguins ( All Day )

An exciting new exhibit at the Discovery Centre!

Daily from Feb 15 until May!

The Discovery Centre’s newest exhibit, Ends of the Earth, takes visitors from one end of our globe to the other. Through interactive and artifact-based exhibits and multimedia experiences, visitors explore the fascinating (and cold!) worlds of the Arctic and Antarctic. Ends of the Earth explores the unique nature of the Earth’s polar regions, the current science being undertaken there, and how these regions act as indicators of climate change on our planet. The exhibit will provide the content and context to explore, and hopefully protect, these fragile regions on our planet.

NSSS Youth Re-launch 'Dorothea' ( 10:00 am )

The Nova Scotia Sea School in partnership with the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic will host a ceremony on Saturday May 11th on the Halifax Waterfront in celebration of the re-launch of the vessel ‘Dorothea’.

‘Dorothea’, the Nova Scotia Sea School’s (NSSS) first expedition boat was built in 1994 by 15 teens. The project’s success launched 18 years of nautical adventure within Atlantic Canada. Dorothea has had more than 1200 participants explore the Nova Scotia coast line while NSSS staff promote personal growth and an unforgettable experience.

“Our sailing adventures transform how young people see themselves, the world around them and their capacity to contribute to society. From the experience of life on a small boat they gain the confidence and awareness to make important decisions about their lives while also making lifelong friendships”, says Heather Kelday, Executive Director of NSSS.

During the fall/winter of 2012-2013, the NSSS launched the ‘Revive Dorothea’ campaign to raise $38,000 to re-construct ‘Dorothea’ and so far has raised $25,000 with hopes of securing the remaining funds by their launch date in May. Since the campaign launch, ‘Dorothea’ has undergone re-construction outside of the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic (MMA). Through the support of more than 20 community groups and countless volunteers, NSSS is ready to launch ‘Dorothea’ back into the harbour.

On Saturday May 11, from 12:30 to 1:00 P.M the NSSS will be hosting a ceremony outside of the Museum of the Atlantic, at wharf #29. After launching ‘Dorothea’ the NSSS will donate the original transom of the sailboat to the MMA as an artefact to be shown for years to come. A reception will take place following the re-launch in the Maritime Museum’s boat shop and courtyard. The day’s events will include:
o Youth directed launch of Dorothea with ceremonial blessings
o Hands –on traditional knots, navigation and art activities for youth / kids
o Summer sailing camp registration booth

This is a public event, all are encouraged to come take part in this spectacular event and learn more about NSSS sailing programs.

Bluenose Marathon Doctor's Of NS Run! ( All Day )

Scotiabank Blue Nose Marathon is proud that the Doctors Nova Scotia Youth Run is the largest in Canada! As many as 4,000 young athletes (plus a couple thousand parents) will be taking to the streets of Halifax for a 4.2 fun run on Saturday May 18, 2013

Doctors Nova Scotia is proud to be the official race sponsor of the Youth Run for the 10th consecutive year.

Doctors Nova Scotia is passionate about improving patient care and helping Nova Scotians live healthy and active lives. Its award-winning Kids’ Run Club is a great example of its commitment to helping Nova Scotians live healthy. In fact, many of Myles’ young runners begin training for the Youth Run through the Doctors Nova Scotia Kids’ Run Club. This free, school-based running program educates children about the importance of leading a physically active and healthy life while giving them an opportunity to be active through running.

Doctors across the province congratulate all of the Youth Run participants on their commitment to living an active life! We can’t wait to see you all at the finish line!

Exciting News for 2013

Look out OVAL, here we come!  This year’s Doctors Nova Scotia Youth Run will follow the same route as last year except for one very exciting change! We’ve added one lap of the Emera Oval! Over the past 2 years, the Emera Oval has become Halifax’s newest iconic sporting facility, attracting thousands of skating enthusiasts to its frozen surface.  Entrance to the Emera Oval will be from Cogswell Street, just past the Five Corners intersection. After completing one counter-clockwise circuit, participants will return to Cogswell near the Robie Street intersection.  Also new for 2013 – the Youth Run water station will be located in the area near the exit from the Emera Oval as well as LIVE entertainment!

New Location for Youth Run Kit Pick up

On Blue Nose Weekend, you can find On-Site Registration and Kit Pick-Up for the Doctors Nova Scotia Youth Run on the 3rd floor at World Trade and Convention Centre (WTCC) in downtown Halifax.

Extended Studies Launch ( All Day )

Birch Hills Academy is launching the Extended Studies Program with information sessions at sites around HRM. May 11, 2013 Bedford Library 10am Birch Hills Academy 2pm (109 White Hills Run). Just like our bodies, our brains need ongoing workouts in order to develop effectively. We know that each and every student is unique and therefore learns differently. In today's busy classrooms, many students either fall behind, or are simple left to challenge themselves when a more rigorous curriculum would accelerate their development.
